Sweden 1871-ST riksdaler specie Dav-356
This specimen was lot 2224 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €230 (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEDEN, KÖNIGREICH, Karl XV. 1859-1872. 4 Riksdaler Riksmynt 1871, Stockholm. Mit vertiefter Randschrift: 75/100 DELAR FINSILFVER (Verzierung). Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XV, 1859-72, four riksdaler riksmynt of 1871, Stockholm mint with edge lettering "75/100 Fine Silver". Very fine to extremely fine.)"
Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. In 1855, the skilling was dropped and 100 öre = 4 riksdaler riksmynt = one riksdaler specie (the riksdaler specie remained unchanged). This type of 1861-71 is somewhat common. In 1873, the riksdaler specie was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt).
Recorded mintage: 260,000.
Specification: 34.00 g, 0.750 fine silver.
