CNG Lissner sale, lot 1061

This specimen was lot 1061 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $181.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Oscar I. 1844–1859. AR 1/32 Riksdaler. Stockholm mint. Alexander Grandinson, engraver. Dated 1852 AG. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Lovely toned iridescent specimen with highly lustrous surfaces. Scarce denomination and none graded higher." This type is noted for 1851-53 but was dropped in the reform of 1855. In the reform of 1830, the twelfth, sixth and third riksdalers were dropped for eighth, quarter and half riksdalers. The 1/32 riksdaler equaled three skilling. The present dynasty is descended from Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals who defected to Sweden. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period.

Recorded mintage: 480,000.

Specification: 1.06 g, 0.750 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, this specimen Ø13 mm, 1.00 g, 12h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 681; Tingström 11.
