Sweden 1748-HM riksdaler specie Dav-1729
This specimen was lot 30216 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $26,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sweden. Frederick I "Seraphim" Riksdaler 1748-HM MS64 NGC, Stockholm mint. In a word: breathtaking. Quite simply unfathomable quality for the issue whose very limited, one-year production run and pronounced high points often lead to at least a tiny degree of rub. Struck from lavishly polished dies to an absolutely radiant finish, it is hardly an exaggeration to say that the offering could very easily be seen in a gem grade, the details from Frederick's dress to the Order of Seraphim on the reverse are lovingly struck up in razor-sharp precision. Although mintage figures for the type are not recorded by Ahlström, Almer, and Hemmingsson or the Standard Catalog, Künker relayed in their listing from the Hagander Collection than a mere 209 pieces were struck. Ex. Millennia Collection (Goldberg Auction 46B, May 2008, Lot 848); Irving Goodman Collection (Goldberg Auction 15, June 2002, Lot 1024). From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = one mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. This rare type was struck 1748 only.
Recorded mintage: 209.
Specification: 29.25 g, 0.878 fine silver.
