Sweden 1627 ore KM-116
This specimen was lot 1756 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN: Gustaf II Adolf, 1611-1632, AE öre, 1627, a few small scratches in left reverse field, small straight clip at 9:00, light obverse oxidation, but exceptional strike and flan, Choice VF, ex Dr. John Lund Collection." The low value coinage was struck either to the kopparmynt or the silbermynt standard. Before 1633, one öre silver mynt = two öre koppar mynt but the öre silver mynt (S.M.) was raised to 2½ öre koppar mynt (K.M.) and later three öre K.M. The exchange rate was likely theoretical as Sweden was completely denuded of silver to pay for her constant wars. Sweden relied on her large supply of copper but the price of that metal was steadily falling throughout the seventeenth century. This issue of the Nykoping mint is scarce. It is not marked K.M. or S.M.
