Sweden 1623 2 ore
This specimen was lot 11269 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €552 (about US$575). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 2 Öre, 1623. Kalmar Mint. Gustav II Adolf. NGC EF Details--Damaged. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." One riksdaler was 48 öre or six mark. This type was struck 1623-25 and is quite scarce. A klippe version (KM 102) exists but is very rare. The low value coinage was struck either to the kopparmynt or the silbermynt standard. Before 1633, one öre silver mynt = two öre koppar mynt but the öre silver mynt (S.M.) was raised to 2½ öre koppar mynt (K.M.) and later three öre K.M. The exchange rate was likely theoretical as Sweden was completely denuded of silver to pay for her constant wars. Sweden relied on her large supply of copper but the price of that metal was steadily falling throughout the seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: 1.88 g, 0.500 fine silver, 22-23 mm diameter.
