Sincona sale 76, lot 1594

This specimen was lot 1594 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 40,000 CHF (about US$48,552 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWEDEN. Sigismund, 1592-1599. Daler 1594, Stockholm. Münzmeister Gillis (Julius) Coyet d. Ä. (1574-1599). SIGISMVNDVS * DEI * GRATIA * SVECORVM Gekröntes und geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts mit geschultertem Schwert in der Rechten und Reichsapfel in der Linken. Rv. GOTORVM ° WANDALORVM ° Q ° & ° POLONIÆ ° REX ° Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen: Drei Kronen (Tre kronor) / Polen / Folkunger-Löwe (Folkungar) / Litauen mit Mittelschild Korngarbe (Vasa), zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 9 - 4. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. NGC AU58. Kleiner Schrötlingsriss. (kingdom of Sweden, Sigmund I, 1592-99, daler of 1594, Stockholm mint. Obverse: crowned and armored bust right with sword and orb; reverse: crowned and quartered arms of Sweden, Poland and Lithuania with the escutcheon of Vasa in the center. Very rare, especially in this condition, Good extremely fine, Minor flan crack.)"

Davenport lists this type for 1594-98. Wikipedia comments, "Sigismund was the son of King John III of Sweden and his first wife, Catherine Jagiellon, daughter of King Sigismund I of Poland. Elected monarch of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1587, he sought to unify Poland and Sweden under one Catholic kingdom, and when he succeeded his deceased father in 1592 the Polish–Swedish union was created. Opposition in Protestant Sweden caused a war against Sigismund headed by Sigismund's uncle Charles IX, who deposed him in 1599."
