Künker sale 293, lot 2157

This specimen was lot 2157 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,852 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, KÖNIGREICH, Erik XIV. 1560-1568. 1 1/2 Mark 1562, Stockholm. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Sweden, Eric XIV, 1560-68, 1½ mark of 1562, Stockholm mint. Very scarce, especially in this quality. Attractive example with fine patina, about extremely fine.)"

This one year type is rare. It may actually be largesse, money thrown to the populace at major occasions such as coronations and funerals. In Sweden, special types were produced which weren't officially coins but circulated extensively, probably because of a shortage of coinage of good silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 15.10 g.

Catalog reference: Ahlström 20.
