Sweden 1544 daler Dav-8697
This specimen was lot 11010 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €976 (about US$1,125). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Salvator Daler, 1544. Svartsjö Mint. Gustav Vasa. NGC EF Details--Holed. The artistry of the Salvator Dalers from Svartsjö is lightyears ahead of the contemporary emissions from Stockholm. From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)." Gustav Vasa permanently separated Sweden from Denmark-Norway and ended the Kalmar Union. His reign is considered the beginning of modern Swedish history. Among other reforms, he made one daler = four mark = 32 öre. Davenport lists this type, along with closely related dalers, for 1542-50 (Dav-8697 and -8698) and 1559 (Dav-8699). This issue shares the mintage with the very similar Dav-8698, which has the obverse punctuated with stars and no flowers at Christ's feet.
Recorded mintage: 55,345.
Specification: 28.5-29.25 g, silver, 40-44 mm diameter, this specimen 28.63 g.
