This specimen was lot 7309 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 8 Ore Klippe, (15)91. Johan III (1568-92). NGC AU-55. A nice example on a flan free of rough surfaces with much detail impressed. The '9' of date shows re-engraving and dies are a bit worn. Pleasing dark brown patina. Ex: Stack's Bowers & Ponterio Sale #163 November 16, 2011, Lot #23799." This klippe was theoretically equal to a mark but had a fraction of the silver. Johan III was the second son of Gustaf Vasa and was Duke of Finland from 1556-1563 when he was imprisoned for opposing his brother, Eric XIV. After the demise of Erik, Johan III became King in 1568 and ruled until his death in 1592. Johan III attempted to bridge the widening gap between the Catholics and the Lutherans, raising his son Sigismund as a Catholic but gradually siding with the Lutherans under the influence of his second queen, Gunilla Bielke (1568-97).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.29 g, 0.090 fine silver, 28-29 mm square.
