Künker sale 335, lot 4459

This specimen was lot 4459 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH. Eberhard Ludwig, 1693-1733. Reichstaler 1694, Augsburg. Prägung für den Schwäbischen Kreis. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg, Eberhard Louis, 1693-1733, thaler of 1694, Augsburg mint. Struck for the Swabian circle. Rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This rare thaler was struck by the duke of Württemberg for the Swabian Circle, an administrative division of the Holy Roman Empire that roughly corresponds to the modern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Besides the regional powers of Baden and Wurttemberg, it also included the Austrian Breisgau, Hohenzollern, Furstenburg and a mess of free cities and petty lordships.
