Surinam H3038-36722b.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 36722 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Five-Coin Proof Set 1962-S. Mintage 650 sets. All coins certified by NGC as follows: Cent PR66 Red and Brown; 5 Cents PR66; 10 Cents PR66; 25 Cents PR65; Gulden PR66. A virtually flawless set, sold with original box of issue." The "republic" in the auction description is a misnomer; Surinam did not obtain her independence until 1975. Four dates are known for this type (1962, 1966, 1970 and 1972). In 1974 the denomination was converted to aluminum and struck in that form until 1986.

Recorded mintage: 6,000,000 plus 650 proofs.

Specification: 2.55 g, bronze, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM PS1 (set); KM 11.
