Sudan AH 1310(8) 2 piastres
This specimen was lot 1208 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUDAN: Abdullah ibn Mohammed, 1885-1898, BI 2 piastres, AH1310 year 8, exceptional condition for this rare type, key date/regnal year, VF, R, ex Wolfgang Schuster Collection." This type was struck AH 1310-1311 and is very scarce, verging on rare. The independent states comprising Sudan since the 14th C. were conquered by the Egyptian Pasha Muhammad Ali in 1820-1822. Egyptian domination was broken in 1881 AD during the Mahdi Rebellion and the British quickly stepped in, colonizing the region until independence in 1956. Early Sudanese coinage imitate both Egyptian and Turkish designs. The Egyptians did not use the two qirsh.
