The independent states comprising Sudan since the 14th C. were conquered by the Egyptian Pasha Muhammad Ali in 1820-1822. Egyptian domination was broken in 1881 AD during the Mahdi Rebellion and the British quickly stepped in, colonizing the region until independence in 1956. Early Sudanese coinage imitate both Egyptian and Turkish designs. This specimen was lot 1529 in Steve Album auction 14 on Sept 21-22, 2012, and sold for $200. The lot description[1] reads:
"SUDAN: 'Abd Allah, Khalifa, 1885-1898, AR 20 piastres, Omdurman, AH1310 year 8, lovely strike, choice Extremely Fine."
