Sudan 1978 5 pounds
This specimen was lot 75549 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUDAN. 5 Pounds, AH 1398/1978. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. An near-Perfect issue in terms of strike and technical execution. Incorrectly called Piefort by NGC." Sudan obtained independence from Great Britain and Egypt in 1956 and began to issue coins soon thereafter. The Christian, black-dominated south has never regarded itself as part of the Arab-dominated north and the resulting conflict has frequently erupted into war. This NCLT was accompanied by a silver ten pounds, a gold twenty-five pounds and fifty pounds.
Recorded mintage: 1,423 proofs plus 2,000 countermarked "B23".
