Strasbourg 1617 thaler Dav-5846
This specimen was lot 31210 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Strassbourg. Imperial Free City Taler 1617 MS64 NGC, Strassbourg mint. Celebrating the centennial of the Protestant Reformation, a type that surfaces only once every few years, proudly represented here with NGC's "top pop." Clad with original luster, the specimen glints during in-hand inspection, a spectacle that enhances the devices raised in bas-relief and provides contrast to the age-old slate patina. Ex. Jose Vall i Serrano Collection (Privately Purchased in August 2018). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This scarce type was accompanied by a klippe (Dav-5846B), a double thaler (Dav-A5845), a triple thaler (Dav-B5845), a six thaler (Dav-5845) and a ducat (Fr-235), all to commemorate the centennial of the Reformation. Several other Protestant states also marked the occasion.
