Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20564
SB121-20564r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20564 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 20 Cents, 1890-H. Heaton Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS population report by a single specimen, this example itself is tied with just one other at the MS-62 level. Pleasingly toned and alluringly brilliant, it offers some hints of olive green and champagne near the extremes of the peripheries and gently outlining the devices." The type was struck in 1871-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the large mintage. This date is fairly common for the type altho this example realized ten times the catalog value. Proofs exist.

Recorded mintage: 270,000.

Specification: 5.43 g, 0.800 fine silver, .139 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-20; Prid-57.
