Stolberg 1740-IIG 1/6 thaler
This specimen was part of lot 1037 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), which sold for €190 (about US$262 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, STOLBERG, lot de 2 p.: Christoph Ludwig et Friedrich Botho, 1/6 Taler, 1740; Friedrich Botho et Karl, 2/3 Taler, 1764. Friederich 1832, 1985. Fines griffes. Très Beau. (Germany, county of Stolberg, Christopher Louis and Frederick Botho, one-sixth thaler of 1740 and a two-thirds thaler of 1764. Fine scratches, Very Fine.)"
Christoph Ludwig (r. 1738-61) was the second count of Stolberg-Stolberg. Friedrich Botho (r. 1739-68) was the second count of Stolberg-Rossla. Altho the SCWC lists this as a 1740-50 and 1756 issue of Stolberg-Stolberg, the presence of both names on this coin makes it a joint issue. Half gulden, gulden and 24 mariengroschen also exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.25 g, silver, 24-25 mm diameter, this specimen 6,02 g.
