Mozambique 1821 40 reis rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 23574 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAINT THOMAS & PRINCE. 40 Reis, 1821. Bahia Mint. Joao VI. NGC AU-55 Brown. Immensely pleasing with reddish-brown surfaces, this charming specimen exhibits only a light degree of handling. Accordingly, just one has been graded finer by NGC." The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975. This rather scarce issue was made in Lisbon and Bahia along with a copper twenty and eighty réis. It may be distinguished from Brazilian issues by the denomination in Arabic numbers rather than Roman (see Brazil).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.42 g, copper, 29.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-E1.
