St. Thomas and Prince 1813-R 80 reis
This specimen was lot 4551 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $195.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "St. Thomas & Prince. 80 Reis, 1813-R. Crown, value and date. Reverse: Globe. Bold strike. NGC graded EF-45 Brown. The Charles Ruby Collection." The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975. This rather scarce issue was made in Rio de Janiero along with a copper twenty and forty reis. It may be distinguished from Brazilian issues by the denomination in Arabic numbers rather than Roman (see Brazil KM 233.3).
