St. Gall 1509 dicken
This specimen was lot 4479 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1509, St. Gallen. Schön. Henkelspur. (Switzerland, city and canton of St. Gall, dicken of 1509, St. Gall mint. Fine, Mount mark.)"
This type was struck 1500-05, 1509-13 and was worth 24 kreuzer or six batzen. Numista says it was one-fifth of a thaler but the weight is closer to a third of a thaler. The reverse legend, "+SANCTUS*OTHMARVS*1504", cites St. Othmar, died 759, who was the first abbot of St. Gall. The abbey survived until 1805.
