Sincona sale 68, lot 5413

This specimen was lot 5413 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | St. Gallen | Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1505, St. Gallen. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Feine Patina und überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (city and canton of St. Gall, dicken of 1505, Very fine-extremely fine, Nicely toned and extraordinarily well struck.)"

The dicken was so called because it was thicker than most contemporary coins. This type is noted for 1500-05 and 1509-13. The dicken, equal to 24 kreuzer, was at this time one third of a thaler. The reverse legend, "+SANCTUS*OTHMARVS*1505", cites St. Othmar, died 759, who was the first abbot of St. Gall. The abbey survived until 1805.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.6 g, silver, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 9.69 g.

Catalog reference: TZN 15a, HMZ 2-887e.
