Sincona sale 95, lot 4487

This specimen was lot 4487 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$416 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Groschen 1579, St. Gallen. Münzzeichen: Vierspeichiges Mühlenrad, dem Münzmeister Konrad Gmünder zugeschrieben. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, city and canton of St. Gall, groschen of 1579, St. Gall mint. Very rare, Very Fine. Mintmark: Four-spoked mill wheel, attributed to the mint master Konrad Gmünder.)"

This type was struck steadily 1563-73, 1579-80 and 1588-89. Later dates were made using roller dies. One groschen was three kreuzer or 1/24 thaler.
