Speyer SB819-20661r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20661 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Speyer. Ducat, 1745. Franz Christoph von Hutten zu Stolzenberg. NGC MS-62★. Commemorating the homage paid to the city of Bruchsal. Exceedingly lustrous and prooflike, with razor sharp detail and only lightly scattered marks. The star designation for exceptional eye appeal is clearly well deserved on this alluring specimen." This appears to be the only gold coin issued by this particular bishop. The next ducat would appear in 1770 (Fr-3310). The bishopric of Speyer was an enclave in the Palatinate and was annexed by Napoleon in 1801. After his fall, the town passed to Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-3309; KM-60.
