The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Madrid for Spain, 1999-2006. Like other members of the Eurozone, Spain began minting euros in 1999 but their use did not become compulsory until 2002. The admission of additional members caused the reverse to be redesigned in 2007 to show the enlarged zone.
