In 1931, Alfonso XIII, king of Spain, was overthrown and exiled and a republic established. The political stresses unleashed thereby continued to wrack Spain and the regime's life was brief; in 1936, General Franco pronounced against the government and by 1939 had conquered Spain for the Fascists. Silver would disappear from circulation until Franco's 100 pesestas of 1966-70.
