Spain 1903-SM V peseta (03)
The first specimen shown was lot 444 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 110 € (about US$171 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Alfonso XIII (1885-1931). 1903*1903. SMV. 1 peseta. Muy bella. Brillo original. Escasa así. S/C-. (Alfonso XIII, 1885-1931, peseta of 1903, handsome, lustrous, about uncirculated.)"
In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This silver peseta, struck in Madrid in 1903-05, matches the contemporary French silver franc down to the odd .835 alloy. The 1903 and 1904 are common; the 1905 is rare.
Recorded mintage: 10,602,000.
Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .134 troy oz ASW.
