Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2924

This specimen was lot 2924 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 19 € (about US$25 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1901*1901. Alfonso XIII. SMV. 1 peseta. MBC [very fine]." In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail in Spain until the coming of the euro. This silver peseta, struck in Madrid in 1896, 1899-1902, matches the contemporary French silver franc down to the odd .835 alloy.
