In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. After the turn of the century, repeated fiscal crises interrupted regular coinage. This design, struck 1896 and 1900, shows the king as a child. The next issue of 1904 (KM 721) shows him as a teen. In 1931, he was overthrown and exiled.
