Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2945

This specimen was lot 2945 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 40 € (about US$52 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1890*1890. Alfonso XIII. PGM. 5 pesetas. MBC- [about very fine]." In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This design, issued while the king was an infant, was struck in large numbers 1888-92 and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine.

Recorded mintage: 4,275,000 of assayer MP-M plus 3,000,000 of PG-M.
