Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 709

This specimen was lot 709 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €240 (about US$317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1864. Isabel II. Madrid. 10 reales. Leves marquitas. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. EBC/EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, ten reales of 1864, Madrid mint. Light marks, handsome, some original luster, scare thus, extremely fine or better.)"

This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1857-64. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by three, four, six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Segovia, Jubia, Madrid (shown here), Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales.

Specification: 13.14 g, 0.900 fine silver, .380 troy oz ASW, this specimen 12,89 g.
