Spain 1863 4 reales rev Ponterio 169-10814.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 10814 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "MIXED LOTS. Lot of (3) Gem Minor Coins, 1863-1898. 3 pieces in lot. Includes: France Franc, 1867-A; San Marino Lira, 1898-R; and Spain 4 Reales, 1863. All coins attractively toned and lustrous. NGC MS-65. From the Demarete Collection." This Spanish four reales was struck in Madrid during the late years of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1856-64. Instead of the traditional mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Under the new system, this four reales was worth one fifth of a peso instead of the former half. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. The coinage would be reformed a second time in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 1,284,035.

Specification: 5.19 g, 0.900 fine silver, .150 troy oz AS, 23.4-23.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-17058, KM 608.2.
