CNG Lissner collection, lot 950

This specimen was lot 950 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,936. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Isabel II. 1833-1868. Proof AR 10 Reales. Decimal real coinage. Madrid mint; im: 6 pointed star. Dated 1862. In NGC encapsulation graded PF 65. Gem lightly toned proof. Shades of blue, amber, and violet patina over brilliant fields. Only proof ever graded for the type. Extremely rare. Purchased from Louis Collins, February 1973." This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid (shown here) and Seville 1857-64. Instead of the traditional mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. The coinage would be reformed a second time in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 1,428,976. The SCWC mentions no proofs.

Specification: 13.14 g, 0.900 fine silver, .380 troy oz ASW, this specimen Ø29 mm, 13.02 g, 12h axis.
