Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 425

This specimen was lot 425 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1860. Isabel II. Madrid. 2 reales. Bella. Brillo original. Ex Colección Manuela Etcheverría. Rara así. S/C. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, two reales of 1860, Madrid mint. Handsome, original luster, rare thus, uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1857-64. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by three, four, six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Segovia, Jubia, Madrid (shown here), Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales.

Specification: 2.59 g, 0.900 fine silver, .076 troy oz ASW, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 2,58 g.
