Aureo sale 233, lot 602

The specimen shown was lot 602 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 400 euros (about US$666 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1854. Barcelona. 100 reales. Insignificantes marquitas. Muy bella. Brillo original. Rara así. S/C-. (One hundred reales of 1854, Barcelona mint, tiny marks, very nice, original luster, rare thus, About Uncirculated.)"

This Spanish hundred reales was struck in Barcelona during the middle years of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1851-55. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six or seven pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid and Seville). The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, was finally dropped. The 20 reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 22-22.3 mm diameter, 8.38 g, 0.900 fine gold, .242 troy oz AGW.
