Spain 1853-Seg 1/10 real
This specimen was lot 73048 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 1/10 Real, 1853. Segovia Mint. Isabel II. NGC MS-64 Brown. A fairly SCARCE copper denomination only issued by the Segovia mint. Delicately toned with strong eye appeal. An unusually attractive copper coin." This type was struck in Segovia 1850-53. An 1851/0 overdate exists. In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. The coinage would be reformed a second time in 1866.
