South Korea 1970 250 won
South Korea is today a prosperous nation filled with teenagers playing video games. However, in 1970, South Korea was still recovering from the devastation of the Korean War (1950-53) which more or less flattened the entire country. Little coinage was emitted prior to the reform of 1968. This specimen was lot 33399 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "South Korea. Republic Proof 250 Won 1970 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Portrait of Chung Hee Park. A gentle lavender toning on both sides begets an alluring effect." This commemorative was part of a set which included KM 7 (50 won), KM 8 (silver 100 won), KM 10 (silver 200 won), KM 13 (silver 1000 won), KM 14 (gold 1000 won) and KM 15 (gold 2500 won).
