This specimen was lot 21578 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 25 Rand, 2004. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Issued for the 10th anniversary of the restoration of democracy, this exceptionally lustrous and frosted 1 ounce piece features the appearance of Nelson Mandela and a protea flower." Nelson Mandela, hero of the struggle against apartheid, appears on many South African coins. We wish that his successors could maintain his level of statesmanship.

Recorded mintage: 6,000 + 492 with countermark.

Specification: 31.11 g, 0.999 fine gold, 32.69 mm diameter.
