This specimen was lot 75376 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Pound, 1960. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-66. A Gem in all facets, this amazingly entrancing proof overwhelms the senses with brilliant luster and sheening gold reflectivity that is unbroken to the naked eye." This type was minted in small numbers 1953-60 but as all are in collector's hands, it obtains little premium. This example realized less than one-fifth of the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: 1,161 plus 1,950 proofs.
Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .234 troy oz AGW.
