Solothurn (1565-68) kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3469 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Kreuzer o. J. (1565-1568), Solothurn. Vorderseite mit neuem Münzzeichen Zainhaken. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Das Münzzeichen Zainhaken wird Onofrion Wohnlich zugeschrieben und kommt in den Jahren 1565 bis 1568 vor. Damit ist die Prägezeit dieses Stücks definiert. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, undated kreuzer, circa 1565-68, Solothurn mint. Obverse with crossed hooks mintmark. Rare, Good very fine. The cross hooks mint mark is attributed to Onofrion Wohnlich and appears in the years 1565 to 1568. This defines the minting period of this piece.)"
In Germany in the mid sixteenth century, a thaler was 72 kreuzer. This type was struck undated, as here, and 1557-79. Four kreuzer made a batzen.
