Sincona sale 70, lot 3533

The first specimen was lot 5308 in Sincona sale 35 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,128 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Solothurn, Taler o. J. (um 1550-1570). Grosses Solothurner Wappen unter Doppeladler zwischen S O. Rv. Der geharnischte Ursus von vorn mit Langschwert und Fahne. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (canton of Solothurn, undated thaler of circa 1550-70. Obverse: large cantonal arms below a double headed eagle divide 'S-O'; reverse: armored St. Ursus with long sword and standard. Very fine to extremely fine, Better than average.)"

The second specimen was lot 3533 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,655 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Solothurn | Stadt und Kanton. Taler o. J. (um 1550-1570), Solothurn. Einköpfiger Adler. Äusserst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Kleine Kratzer auf der Rückseite. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, undated thaler from around 1550-70, Solothurn mint, Single-headed eagle. Extremely rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine, Small scratches on reverse.)"

Davenport notes that most of the sixteenth century thalers of Solothurn were struck undated, of which this one is typical.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.69 g, the second specimen 28.48 g.

Catalog reference: HMZ 2-821b, Dav-8749. The second specimen is Simmen 53, HMZ 2-821a.
