Sincona sale 35, lot 5431

This specimen was lot 5431 in Sincona sale 35 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$445 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Wallis / Valais | Sitten, Bistum, Franz Joseph Supersaxo, 1701-1734 Halbbatzen 1709. Vorzüglich-FDC. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (canton of Valais, bishopric of Sitten, Francis Joseph Supersaxo, 1701-34. half batzen of 1709. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Better than average.)"

This one year type was issued by the bishop of Sitten (Sion in French), now part of the canton of Valais. Valais was not officially a member of the Swiss confederation until 1815. This type was issued 1708-10, 1721-22 and is fairly expensive.
