Sinaloa (1914-16) peso
This specimen was lot 70585 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Sinaloa. Peso, ND (ca. 1915). PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VG Details. A crude type, this series was cast from sand molds after an earlier type. These examples often have heavy wear from circulation and this one is no exception but does not take away from its overall appeal." To increase their acceptance, the revolutionaries later counterstamped the fifty centavos and one pesos they made with a "G.C." Some pesos (KM 769, KM 770 (with counterstamp)) were made from liberty cap pesos and others (KM 768.1 (shown here), KM 768.2 (with counterstamp)) were made from eight reales.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 26-33 g, silver, 38.8-39 mm diameter.
