Sierra Leone 1966 1/4 golde
This specimen was issued for Sierra Leone in 1966 only. Sierra Leone was established around 1807 as a settlement for freed slaves under British protection and later became a British colony. During colonial times, it used the coinage of British West Africa. Sierra Leone obtained its independence in 1961 but has several times lapsed into vicious civil war, fed by the revenue from diamond mines. This specimen was lot 2019 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $540.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sierra Leone. 1/4 Golde, 1966 Choice Brilliant Unc. Lion head facing. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated." This commemorative was accompanied by half and one golde pieces.
Recorded mintage: 5,000 plus 600 proofs (weighing 15 g) plus 100 in palladium.
Specification: 13.64 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, .3946 troy oz AGW.
