This specimen was issued by Sierra Leone in 1964 only. Sierra Leone was established around 1807 as a settlement for freed slaves under British protection and later became a British colony. During colonial times, it used the coinage of British West Africa. Sierra Leone obtained its independence in 1961 but has several times lapsed into vicious civil war, fed by the revenue from diamond mines.
