Sicily 1611-DC scudo Dav-4041
The first specimen was lot 14 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 670 euro (about US$1,063 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1611. Messina. D-C. 1 escudo. Atractiva. Rara. MBC+. (city of Messina, scudo of 1611. Attractive, rare, choice very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1308 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 500 euro (about US$769 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ITALIE, SICILE, Philippe III d'Espagne (1598-1621), AR scudo, 1611, Messine. Droit : B. cuirassé à droite, le col fraisé. Revers : Ecu losangé et couronné entre I-P (Giovanni del Pozzo). Rare. Légère double frappe. Très Beau. (Italy, kingdom of Sicily, Philip III of Spain (1598-1621), silver scudo of 1611, Messina mint. Obverse: armored bust to right, with ruffed collar. Reverse: crowned oval arms divide "I-P". Rare, slightly double struck, very fine.)"
The SCWC lists this rare coin under the kingdom of Sicily, then under Spanish rule. This type is listed for 1610-12.
