Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 33265

This specimen was lot 33265 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/3 Ryal, 1565. Edinburgh Mint. Mary with Henry Stuart (Lord Darnley). PCGS AU-55. Fourth period. Quite pleasantly struck and very well preserved, especially for the issue, this deeply toned example no doubt must be one of the more elite representatives of the type that one will encounter. From the Richard August Collection." This type of 1565-66 also comes with a thistle countermark, raising its value 10% to eleven shillings.
