This specimen was lot 37384 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/3 Groat, ND (1526-39). Edinburgh Mint. James V. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. From the Richard August Collection." The groat was traditionally eight Scottish pence. We don't know what impelled the king to strike a one-third groat. It was not struck again.
