Schwarzburg 1605 thaler Dav-7675
This specimen was lot 73344 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schwarzburg. Taler, 1605. Erfurt Mint. Joint Coinage VII (between Schwarzburg and Rudolstadt). PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. A fairly RARE issue with seven different rulers joining in being named upon the coin, this broad crown does exhibits some evidence of handling as well as the noted tooling, but still retains solid overall detail. The obverse features St. Martin upon a horse, with a beggar below. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This thaler is from the seventh joint coinage and was struck 1605 along with Dav-7674 and Dav-7676. It is rather expensive, even in worn condition. Schwarzburg in Thuringia was partitioned and reunited several times, the most important partition being that of 1583, when Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen were created. In 1605, Charles Gunther, Louis Gunther and Albert Gunther were jointly counts of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Gunther XXV, Charles Gunther, Anton Henry and John Gunther II were jointly counts of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt survived until 1918 and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen fell extinct in 1909.
