Schwarzburg in 1789

This specimen was lot 30252 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schwarzburg. Taler, 1560. Arnstadt Mint. Guenther XLI, with Johann Guenther. PCGS AU-53. This VERY RARE crown from the seemingly endless line of Guenthers from Schwarzburg features not only a wildman, but a 'wildwoman' as well. In the interest of early modern modesty, the latter is depicted with much more in the way of 'foliage clothing' than the former, her male counterpart. Pleasingly toned and only lightly handled. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Schwarzburg was originally a unified county in the Saxon duchies (now Thuringia). On the death of Gunther XLI in 1583, the county was divided among his three brothers, one of whom, William, died in 1597, leaving Albert VII to found Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and John Gunther I to found Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt survived until 1918 and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen fell extinct in 1909. This obscure type was struck 1560-63 and undated.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM MB16, Dav-9829.
