Künker sale 294, lot 3764

This specimen was lot 3764 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,852 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWARZBURG-RUDOLSTADT, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1711 FÜRSTENTUM, Ludwig Friedrich II. 1793-1807. Dukat 1803. Ausbeute. Vermutlich aus dem Gold der Schwarza geprägt. GOLD. RR Nur 311 Exemplare geprägt. Winz. Randfehler, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Part I. Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 459. (Germany, principality of Schwarzbug-Rudolstadt, Louis Frederick II, 1793-1807, ducat of of 1803, for the mines, struck from gold taken from the river Schwarza. Rare, only 311 examples struck, light scratch, edge defects, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This is the only ducat listed for this tiny state, which survived into the Wilhelmine empire to strike reform coinage. The scratch mentioned in the description appears to be a strike-through.

Recorded mintage: 311.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3,45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 146, Divo/S. 209; Fr-3105; Müseler 58.2/3; Schl. 874.
